Several members of the Oregon State basketball team, including sophomore guard Roberto Nelson, have been spending their summer on a service trip to Macedonia.
When the players have had some free time, they have been doing their best to get in some practice on the court by playing in pick-up games. In one recent such game a few weeks ago, Nelson and a teammate pulled off an off-the-backboard alley-oop.
Just one problem: backboards in small gyms in Macedonia are not quite the same as those in NCAA arenas here in the U.S.
As the video below shows, Nelson's dunk shattered the backboard and showered him with broken glass. The glass, in turn, cut Nelson's face and arm and forced him to make a trip to the hospital where he received 20 stitches for the cuts.
Here's the video:
In 24 games played as a freshman last season, Nelson averaged 7.5 points and 1.5 assists per game. He tallied a season-high 34 points in a loss to Arizona State in March.
But if he can put together more play like the alley-oop in Macedonia, Oregon State will be worth the price of attendance this season.
