About a year ago I profiled Axe Cop, a webcomic written by a 5-year-old and drawn by his 29-year-old brother.
Once you see it, you realize Axe Cop is pretty much the greatest comic ever created. The main character is a mustached, axe-wielding police officer who beheads bad guys, and his sidekicks include a giant avocado, a pet dinosaur, a talking dog and a baby with a unicorn horn.
This month Dark Horse Comics had the sense to start publishing Axe Cop ($14.99). Now you can hold the brilliance of young Malachai Nicolle and Ethan Nicolle in your hands, along with insightful commentary from Ethan, 29, on what it's like to collaborate with a 5-year-old.
"My eyes were bloodshot from laughing so hard at some of the things we came up with," Ethan says in the introduction. "I had no idea these (comics) would become the most well-known pieces of work I had ever created."
Mystery Science Theater 3000's Kevin Murphy pens the foreward, and declares Axe Cop "is the first comic series I've read completely and from the beginning, ever. ... It's the pure-light-spectrum view of a kid who's pretty new to the world, and just trying to keep it interesting, to surprise himself, to wring out as much fun as can be wrought."
Since the story comes from the mind of a kid, sometimes it makes little sense. (For example, somehow Axe Cop grew up with a mustache and his parents fed him babies.) But whatever the storyline, it's always hilarious. (I love Sockarang, a character who has socks for arms and uses them as weapons.)
Axe Cop sets my senses abuzz, and good lord, I can't imagine what a movie version would be like. To hear more from the creators, Newsarama posted this interview today. Also, stay tuned to the Axe Cop website for new adventures.
