The Fan Index Top 10

1. Oregon (395,430 social mentions, 1,592 voting points)

Oregon rebounded with a win over UCLA last week, and its swagger is back in a big way. Case in point: This Saturday against Washington, the Ducks will be sporting throwback uniforms. What’s so special about the jerseys, which feature the school’s classic Donald Duck logo? Well, Oregon wore them on October 22, 1994, the day on which Kenny Wheaton’s late pick-six sealed a victory over the Huskies.

2. Tennessee (326,354 social mentions, 1,955 voting points) — Well, at least the Volunteers will have one of the Mannings pulling for them on Saturday night.

3. Georgia (519,000 social mentions, 810 voting points) — Freshman running back Nick Chubb did a nice job filling in for Todd Gurley, huh?

4. Michigan (340,130 social mentions, 1,192 voting points) — The Wolverines snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday. Plus they got to wear these sharp alternate uniforms:

5. Notre Dame (285,467 social mentions, 1,570 voting points) — This week’s Notre Dame-Florida State matchup is, well, huge. Irish fans are hoping their team can repeat this performance:

6. Alabama (602,440 social mentions, 471 voting points) — Considered a revelation as recently as a few weeks ago, new offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin isn’t exactly winning friends these days.

7. USC (438,205 social mentions, 483 voting points)The metallic paint job is great, but the chrome facemasks are what put these over the top:

8. Florida State (941,156 social mentions, 360 voting points)Add Bo Jackson to the list of people who seem displeased with FSU quarterback Jameis Winston.

9. LSU (280,941 social mentions, 883 voting points) — Tigers coach Les Miles has some thoughts about Columbus Day:

10. Texas A&M (360,961 social mentions, 497 voting points) — Upset about the Aggies’ losing streak? Take a peek at next year’s schedule:

Interesting takeaways: Oregon has had a stranglehold on the top spot for six straight weeks. Oklahoma (No. 11) and Texas (No. 15) are the only two Big 12 teams in the top 20. Neither red-hot Mississippi State (No. 33) nor scorching Ole Miss (No. 19) are close to cracking the top 10.

The Bottom 5

Some fan bases from the power conferences aren’t as active as they should be. Here are the lowest ranked teams among the SEC, Pac-12, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC.

81. Wake Forest (31,524 social mentions, 13 voting points) — Wake Forest is struggling this season, but if you’re a fan, check out what some former Demon Deacons are up to in the NFL:

80. Boston College (34,721 1social mentions, 13 voting points) — Here’s some Doug Flutie action to get the BC fans going.

79. Illinois (42,783 social mentions, 13 voting points) — Illinois is honoring alum Red Grange with these slick gray uniforms:

75. California (35,291 social mentions, 16 voting points) — Nice work by the Cal band last week:

74. Vanderbilt (55,309 social mentions, 9 voting points)This emotional story by the Tennessean’s Adam Sparks is a must-read:

The Bonus 5

This is where we highlight a handful of notable teams from outside the top 10. Five fan bases and squads that made news this week:

14. Clemson (135,718 social mentions, 1,904 voting points) This Tigers fan had a bit too much fun last week. Sheesh:

19. Ole Miss (341,110 social mentions, 254 voting points) — Take a peek at Ole Miss’s badass equipment truck. It looks like a prop leftover from Maximum Overdrive:

23. Arkansas (316,232 social mentions, 101 voting points) — A potentially amazing day for the Razorbacks ended with a gut-wrenching 14-13 loss to Alabama. Adding insult to injury is this:

29. Baylor (173,864 social mentions, 97 voting points) — Baylor came back from a 21-point deficit in the fourth quarter to beat TCU 61-58. The highlights are worth watching:

33. Mississippi State (152,474 social mentions, 42 voting points) — The Bulldogs are the top ranked team in the country and just landed on the cover of Sports Illustrated for the second straight week. It’s a good time to be a Mississippi State fan.

1. Tennessee, Neyland Stadium (25% of the vote)

Lots of people love Tennessee’s checkerboard end zones. In fact, when the Neyland Stadium crowd formed a massive checkerboard pattern for the Florida game (see above), fans weren’t given free T-shirts at the gate. Most arrived already decked out in the appropriate colors. Impressive.

Runners-up: Eastern Michigan, Rynearson Stadium (22%); Boise State, Lyle Smith Field at Albertsons Stadium (18%); East Carolina, Bagwell Field at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium (8%)

Interesting takeaways: Surprisingly, Eastern Michigan’s gray turf out-tallied Boise State’s blue turf. East Carolina continues to perform well in our weekly poll. (For my money, ECU’s pirate logo is one of the best in college football.) Air Force’s Falcon Stadium also showed well, pulling in 5% of the votes.
