Shaun White cut his hair (VIDEO)

The Flying Tomato just got sliced. Maybe we can call him the Flying Cherry Tomato?

Olympic gold medalist Shaun White, who earned the nickname based on his wavy red hair, cut off his signature locks this week and posted a clip of the transformation on YouTube.

White said he plans on donating his ponytail to Locks of Love, the organization dedicated to helping children affected by long-term medical hair loss.

"I have been thinking about this for awhile," White said, looking as nervous as a guy about to propose to his girlfriend or beginning a climb of Mount Everest. "But it's for a good cause so I'm going to do it."

The website for Locks of Love says a ponytail must be 10 inches long in order to create a hairpiece. The hair must have also been recently cleaned, and judging by White's, uh, weathered look, he may fall short in that requirement too.

But whether or not White's hair fits the requirements for donation, his dedication to the cause and the awareness he raised is a wonderful gesture during the holiday season. And who knows? It might even make him more aerodynamic for the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.
