UAB head coach Garrick McGee leaving to join Petrino at Louisville

Garrick McGee is stepping down as head coach at Alabama-Birmingham to join Bobby Petrino's new staff at Louisville, a person with knowledge of the move told USA TODAY Sports.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the hire had not been made public yet.

McGee worked alongside Petrino at Arkansas from 2008-2011. He went just 5-19 in two seasons at UAB, which is one of the toughest jobs in America. Still, it's fairly unusual for a head coach in the Football Bowl Subdivision to leave for a coordinator job.

McGee was making $550,000 annually at UAB.
