Marvel plots new series for Netflix

Netflix is turning Daredevil.

In a major deal announced early Thursday, Disney's Marvel Television will produce at least four 13-episode series, each based on a comics character, as well as a Defenders miniseries event.

The first series, focused on Daredevil, will surface in 2015, followed by Jessica Jones, Iron Fist and Luke Cage, unfolding sequentially over "multiple years of original programming," the companies said.

"This deal is unparalleled in its scope and size, and reinforces our commitment to deliver Marvel's brand, content and characters across all platforms of storytelling," said Marvel Entertainment president Alan Fine, in a statement. "Netflix offers an incredible platform for the kind of rich storytelling that is Marvel's specialty," allowing viewers to "binge" on serialized sagas.

Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said Marvel films such as Iron Man and The Avengers are "huge favorites" among subscribers worldwide.

The Marvel pact follows an earlier deal with its parent, Disney, that guarantee Netflix first dibs (ahead of pay-TV channels) to Disney's films, starting with those released theatrically in 2016, that will include releases from Marvel, Pixar and Lucasfilm.
