49ers comprehensive camp preview: Running Backs

Editor’s note: In preparation for the start of 49ers training camp in late July, we’ll go through each position and break down our projected depth chart before players compete for roles on the final 53-man roster and handicap each player’s chances at making the team. The first practice is scheduled for July 28.

The 49ers are on their fourth offensive coordinator in four years. But this time they landed the cream of the crop. New coach Kyle Shanahan, who will be handing offensive coordinator duties, is known as one of the best schematic minds in football. The roster is limited in the first year of the rebuild – but if any coach can turn average players into more, it’s Shanahan.

The running back position features an incumbent on the hot seat, a rookie on his heels and capable players throughout the depth chart that should create storylines up until the final cut day.

The 49ers are expected to use a running back committee to recreate some of the success of Shanahan’s former duo with the Falcons, Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. Running backs coach Bobby Turner has served alongside Shanahan for years and the pair is known for turning rookies into high level starters.

The running back position is far from settled entering training camp and the depth chart will largely depend on who produces throughout the preseason and on the practice field.

Carlos Hyde

Hyde enters training camp atop the running back depth chart after draft rumors swirled regarding the team’s interest in former LSU Tiger Leonard Fournette, putting heat on Hyde as a long-term option at running back. The selection of Joe Williams in the fourth-round, paired with Shanahan and Turner’s affinity for developing young backs, puts Hyde squarely on notice.

Hyde’s career has been dampened by nagging injuries preventing him from playing a full season during his first three years. The team has capable backups and a promising rookie should Hyde have to miss any time. The offensive lines have been a concern throughout Hyde’s career and he may finally have a chance to produce with a quality unit in front of him.

Shanahan’s scheme is a significant change from the shotgun runs that Hyde excelled in since getting drafted and at Ohio State. But his physical traits are apparent when he’s given an opportunity. Hyde’s training camp will be the most intriguing storyline of San Francisco’s running backs as he enters the final year of his rookie contract looking to cash in with a new deal next spring. If camp and the preseason prove Hyde doesn’t fit in the offense, he may be a trade candidate before final cuts.

Chances Hyde makes the 53-man roster: 90 percent
