With training camp approaching at the end of July, we’re taking a look at the 49ers that may find themselves in a fight to make the final 53-man roster.

Few position groups on the 49ers roster received as many additions as the offensive line.

Former Rams center Tim Barnes, Ravens center Jeremy Zuttah, Seahawks tackle Garry Gilliam and Vikings guard Brandon Fusco were all added by 49ers new general manager John Lynch to complete among the crowded group.

While Lynch chose to forgo addressing the line in the NFL draft, he did add undrafted free agent tackles Andrew Lauderdale, Richard Levy and Erik Magnuson.

The only lineman set in the starting lineup is veteran left tackle Joe Staley. Trent Brown is the favorite at right tackle while Josh Garnett, a 2016 first-round pick, has spent time at both guard spots throughout the offseason program.

Behind an undetermined starting lineup is 2016 fifth-round pick and backup tackle John Theus. A two-year starter out of Georgia, Theus (6-6, 303) was one of the final players to be drafted by former general manager Trent Baalke.

He landed a spot on the 49ers 53-man roster last season but was active for just four games due to injuries to Daniel Kilgore, Marcus Martin and Staley. Theus had his first and only start in Week 16 against the Rams.

Theus’ top competition for the ‘swing’ tackle role is likely Gilliam, who started 29 games over the past two seasons for the Seahawks. Gilliam has received reps during the offseason program with the first team at right tackle, rotating with Brown.

Both numbers and circumstance are working against Theus’ chances at making the team. Outside of Brown, he’ll compete with players that have been signed by Lynch and new coach Kyle Shanahan.
