Pro Football Focus predicts 49ers record for 2017

There’s a breeze of optimism swirling around Santa Clara these days with the 49ers going through an eventful transition to the Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch era after three drama-filled seasons.

No, San Francisco isn’t expected to make a playoff push in the power duo’s first year. But Lynch and Shanahan are laying the foundation for a return to contention by focusing on culture and bringing in players that fit their system.

Scouting service Pro Football Focus this week offered up its projections for each NFC team’s record in 2017, which might temper those who think the 49ers could make a surprise run at the postseason.

PFF has San Francisco finishing with the second-worst record in the conference, only ahead of the Rams, whom it beat twice for its only two wins last season:

15. San Francisco 49ers (4-12)

The 49ers had the worst record in the NFC last year. They’ve changed coaches, quarterbacks, and several players. There is reason to be excited about their defensive line. 2015 first-round pick Arik Armstead led 3-4 defensive ends in pass-rushing productivity; 2016 first-round pick DeForest Buckner had 48 pressures which was fourth most for 3-4 defensive ends; and now they add third overall pick in the 2017 draft Solomon Thomas. They are a team in transition, and it might take more than a season for the 49ers return to being a playoff contender.

Our Niners Wire staff predicted the 49ers’ record back when the schedule was announced in April, ranging from 6-10 to 8-8. San Francisco might be transitioning to an entirely new coaching staff and roster littered with new faces, but many of the players are familiar with the Shanahan’s offense and the Seahawks-style defense new coordinator Robert Saleh is putting in place.

Add their last-place schedule and low expectations and the 49ers will be playing with house money this season, which could lead to upsets and a better record than many expect.
