I’m leaning that way, yes. I think Hyde should be a good fit for Kyle Shanahan’s offense, particularly because his zone scheme is similar to what Hyde is used to from college and his first three years with San Francisco. But I’m not convinced San Francisco will want to pay Hyde top dollar or what he’ll command on the open market next spring.

The fact there’s been no word about a contract extension is telling. On the other hand, there hasn’t been word on any extensions with guys entering their contract year. That would indicate the new regime wants to get to know players through the offseason program, training camp and regular season before doling out contracts.

Shanahan has a habit of building running games around mid-round draft picks like recent fourth-rounder Joe Williams and Falcons backs Devonta Freeman and Tevin Coleman. Running back is among the easiest position to identify in the draft. There’s less projecting than other positions because the it’s so reliant on instincts and obvious physical skills.

If Hyde were to leave, he wouldn’t seem all that difficult to replace based on Shanahan’s track record. However, if Hyde stays healthy for most of the year and racks up 1,300 yards this season, there’s a chance he sticks around. But his health is definitely a concern, and his production might dip if Williams, Tim Hightower and/or Matt Breida cut into his carries.
