Key takeaways from 49ers GM John Lynch's Q-and-A before NFL draft

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch spoke to reporters inside the John McVay draft room on Monday and continued to balance his guarded approach with transparency.

He reiterated his team is looking to upgrade every position with 10 selections in the NFL draft this week, including quarterback, and has fielded calls to trade back from the second-overall pick.

Here are five things Lynch said in the half-hour session with reporters that got our attention:

Lynch on floating rumors about the 49ers’ draft plans:

I think the discipline out of this building’s been excellent. I think that’s what they are, they’re assumptions rather than . . . I don’t know who those sources are because there’s only a few people that know. We feel real good about that.

Lynch was asked about reports surrounding the 49ers indicating they’re “strongly considering” a quarterback with the second pick and where he thinks they might be coming from. He noted only a small group of people know what the plan truly is.

The list likely includes himself, Kyle Shanahan, VP of player personnel Adam Peters, senior executive Martin Meyhew and CEO Jed York. The 49ers were known for being chatty off the record with reporters in recent seasons, but that appears to have stopped with Lynch running the show.
