Report: Browns plan on taking Myles Garrett with first pick in NFL draft

The Cleveland Browns won’t end up taking quarterback Mitchell Trubisky with the first pick in the NFL draft. Instead, they’ll select the consensus top prospect in Texas A&M’s Myles Garrett, according to a report from Cleveland.com’s Mary Kay Cabot.

The Browns’ top brass met Thursday afternoon to solidify their plans, but some of them have known for awhile that Garrett was the pick.

“You want to make sure that you get a player (at No. 1) that’s going to be an impact player and that we can count on,” Brown told ESPN Wednesday.

Heading into the big day, there had been rumblings that the Browns might surprise the football world and take Mitch Trubisky No. 1, but that won’t be the case.

The 49ers would have benefitted greatly if Cleveland went with Trubisky, allowing them to land the best pass rusher in the draft. Instead, they face a unique scenario with the second pick without a clear No. 2 prospect behind Garrett.

The most likely prospects for San Francisco are Stanford defensive lineman Solomon Thomas, LSU safety Jamal Adams, Ohio State safety Malik Hooker, Ohio State cornerback Mashon lattimore and LSU running back Leonard Fournette.

The 49ers have reportedly been interested in trading down from the second pick, but the trade market might be thin given the group of players ranked behind Garrett share similar values on draft boards.
