Instant Analysis: 49ers land intriguing DB with final pick

John Lynch made the final pick as the 49ers rookie general manager, selecting Miami defensive back Adrian Colbert with pick No. 229.

The first thing that stands out about Colbert is his frame. At 6-foot-2 and 205 pounds, he’s well above the average size for NFL cornerbacks. He’s also an ideal fit for what the 49ers will be looking for in their defensive scheme.

San Francisco is transitioning to a new 4-3 defense under coordinator Robert Saleh reminiscent of their rival Seattle Seahawks. With eight men routinely in the box, the team will require their defensive backs to hold their own along the perimeter in press-man coverage.

Colbert is physical and doesn’t shy from contract, stemming from his time at Texas in which he played safety before transferring to Miami. He showcases good zone awareness but doesn’t yet have the press skills that you would expect from a cornerback his size. Colbert totaled 22 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, an interception and three pass break-ups in his final season with Miami.

In the seventh round, team’s are looking for traits that can be molded into a player that outperforms their draft stock. Former general manager Trent Baalke achieved this in 2015 with seventh-round offensive lineman Trent Brown.

Lynch sees a cornerback with ideal measurables that can be developed into a solid press cornerback. The best-case scenario for Colbert – outside of the 53-man roster – is landing a spot on the practice squad while the team gives the time he needs to improve his technique. However, he could carve out a role with his work on special teams.
