‘Carlos the Jackal’ could get life sentence — again

A French prosecutor has requested a third life sentence for the man known as "Carlos the Jackal," once the world’s most-wanted fugitive, for a deadly 1974 attack on a Paris shopping arcade. The court is expected to return its verdict Tuesday. The Venezuelan-born Ilich Ramirez Sanchez is already serving two life sentences in France. It’s probably the last case concerning his past to come to trial. Sanchez has denied involvement, saying there’s no proof against him.

Trump’s executive order to undo Obama’s Clean Power Plan

Following through on campaign promises to undo regulation and help revitalize the coal industry, President Trump is expected to sign an executive order Tuesday that would roll back the Obama administration plan to cut carbon emissions. Environmental Protection Agency head Scott Pruitt called Trump’s rule an “energy independence” executive order and said that regulation can be pro-jobs and pro-environment. The Supreme Court halted implementation of the Clean Power Plan rule last February while legal battles played out in appeals courts.

Cleaning up after Cyclone Debbie

Residents of northeastern Australia are cleaning up and recovering Tuesday (which is Wednesday there) from powerful Cyclone Debbie, which slammed into the coast with winds estimated at up to 120 mph. One death was blamed on the cyclone when a tourist was killed amid stormy weather on Monday, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the state of Queensland has been hit by nine tropical cyclones of Category 3 or higher strength since 1989. Four of these storms have hit since 2011, the Weather Underground said. A cyclone is the same type of storm as a hurricane.

'Bones' says goodbye

After 12 seasons, Bones is finally calling it a day. Fox’s longest-running drama meets its end Tuesday, 246 episodes after its debut in 2005. Starring Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz in the lead roles, the show developed a loyal following that allowed it to not only have such a long run, but also an ever-changing series of time slots. Tuesday’s series finale (9 p.m. ET/PT) promises to give loyalists one more treat, focusing on the core characters and their attempt to capture the man who killed Bones' father — not to mention their attempt to survive the bomb blast that ended last week's outing.

Emily Deschanel, left, and David Boreanaz end Fox's longest-running drama, 'Bones,' after a 12-season run.

Hearing on Flint water crisis agreement

Under a proposal to settle a federal lawsuit, Michigan will allocate $87 million for the City of Flint to identify and replace at least 18,000 unsafe water lines by 2020. It will also require state officials to pay $895,000 to cover the plaintiffs' litigation costs. U.S. District Judge David Lawson will hold a hearing at 1 p.m. ET Tuesday to consider the agreement. He is expected to approve the deal.Flint's drinking water became contaminated with lead in April 2014. The corrosive water leached from pipes, joints and fixtures, causing a spike in toxic lead levels in the blood of Flint's children and older residents.
