2017 NFL Draft: Whispers of the Jaguars taking a QB fourth overall going strong

With the draft just two days away, rumors are popping up left and right at the most ideal point of the draft process. One quickly gaining steam is the notion that the Jacksonville Jaguars could take a quarterback with the No. 4 overall selection.

CBS Sports’ own Pete Prisco is among many who haven’t ruled the possibility out as he believes the probability of taking a signal-caller is higher than most others.

It’s worth noting that Prisco is close to the team, having covered them at numerous points in the past. Though he didn’t put an exact name with the rumor, it’s one certainly worth watching.

NFL Network’s Mike Silver is another analyst who could be hinting at a change at signal-caller, stating that the Jaguars selection could surprise the nation. Taking that into context, a defensive lineman wouldn’t surprise anyone, nor would a running back. But a defensive back and a quarterback definitely would.

Silver tends to be one of the more accurate analysts when it comes to Jacksonville, so his statement could have some validity to it.

Greg Gabriel of Pro Football Weekly is another writer who has chimed in on the rumor.

As for who it could be, your guess is good as mine, though most have labeled DeShaun Watson as the best quarterback in the draft. As previously reported, the Jaguars hosted Watson earlier this month and ESPN’s Josina Anderson initially reported it would be for two days, though it wasn’t confirmed how long he actually visited the headquarters.

Texas Tech gunslinger Patrick Mahomes also visited the Jaguars in early April and would be even more of a shocker than Watson. Though most have him listed as a first round selection, very few have him as a top-5 selection. Some have deemed Mahomes as the best arm talent in the draft but believe he’ll need a year of development.

Considering this, if Coughlin pulled the trigger on either Mahomes or Watson it would certainly be alarming — most notably, it would reopen debate of his opinion on Blake Bortles, for whom the VP has been notoriously noncommittal about.
