49ers announce Tom Rathman's inclusion to team's Hall of Fame

The 49ers are adding long-time fullback and running backs coach Tom Rathman to the team’s Hall of Fame at Levi’s Stadium, CEO Jed York announced Tuesday.

Rathman was a key figure on San Francisco’s offense from 1986 to 1993 before playing a season with the Raiders. He was used more often as a blocker and pass catcher than ball carrier, but he excelled in his versatile role within Bill Walsh’s West Cost offense.

Rathman made 294 receptions for 2,490 yards and eight touchdowns during his eight seasons with the 49ers. He served as the team’s running backs coach from 1997 to 2002 before holding the same position with the Lions and Raiders. He returned to San Francisco in 2009 and was the running backs coach while the team went through head coaches Mike Singletary, Jim Harbaugh, Jim Tomsula and Chip Kelly.

New coach Kyle Shanahan is bringing his long-time running backs coach Bobby Turner with him to the 49ers taking Rathman’s spot.
