LOS ANGELES — Todd Fisher had a true family affair at the public memorial service Saturday for his sister Carrie Fisher and his mother, Debbie Reynolds.

Noticeably missing from the joyous and often emotional memorial at Forest Lawn Cemetery were Carrie Fisher's daughter Billie Lourd and the Star Wars actress' beloved French bulldog companion Gary.

Todd Fisher had previously said both would be attending the event, which filled the 1,200 seat theater with fans, family and friends.

Speaking afterward, Fisher explained that the public event might have been too tough for Lourd to deal with, along with watching the memories of her mother and grandmother screened onstage. Reynolds and Fisher died within 24 hours of each other in December.

"I think she would have loved it. But it would have ripped her heart out," said Fisher. "It ripped my heart out."

Fisher emceed the event, which featured songs, dance routines, a speech from Dan Aykroyd and an appearance from Star Wars droid R2-D2. One emotional segment featured a clip of Billie Lourd singing onstage with her mother for the first time in Las Vegas. Fisher said even he was heartbroken behind the smiles.

"Everyone is having a hard time. Don’t think any of this is easy just because we’re up there (on stage)," said Fisher. "This is tough time on all of us. Billie is feeling the loss, we all are. Some of us are better at faking it and getting through the show. I don’t think it’s important to come here and break down in front of a bunch of people."

Fisher said he had not spoken to Lourd on Saturday, but said he spoke to her father, talent agent Bryan Lourd, on Friday night.

"The rule of thumb was, come here if you want to," said Fisher. "A lot of Carrie’s friends couldn’t come because they don’t want to cry in public."

As for Gary Fisher, the French bulldog, Fisher did not have an explanation for the absence. However, Reynolds' dog Dwight was in attendance, as well as Carrie Fisher's parrot.

Fisher said Gary is being well looked after by Carrie's longtime assistant.

"None of these pets will ever go without what’s best for them," said Fisher. "You know that these pets are going to be well looked after. They all have trust funds. Let’s put it that way."
