The Eiffel Tower turned off its lights Wednesday night to pay tribute to the victims of the London terror attack.

Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo announced her decision to make the city's iconic landmark go dark as a move of solidarity after at four people were killed and many left injured by a lone attacker near the United Kingdom's Parliament in London. The attacker, who authorities believe attacked alone, was shot dead by police outside the entrance to Parliament after he fatally stabbed a police officer.

"I decided to extinct the Eiffel Tower at midnight to honor the victims of the attack in London," Hidalgo tweeted in French, using the #NousSommesUnis, which translates to “We Are United."

The Eiffel Tower, which usually sparkles until 1 a.m., has turned off its lights before to support victims of tragedies. In December, the tower went dark to encourage the international community to help with the crisis in Syria.
