Here's how Dave Chappelle celebrated the premiere of his Netflix specials

Dave Chapelle hosts an exclusive live standup show celebrating his return, presented by Netflix & Live Nation on Monday, March 20th, at The h.wood Group's Peppermint Club, in West Hollywood, Calif.

How does a comic celebrate the launch of his comedy specials?

With a standup set, naturally. And a party. And a surprise performance by Stevie Wonder.

At least that’s what Dave Chappelle did Monday night before the midnight premiere of his two Netflix shows.

“This is a celebration!” he announced at The H.wood Group's swanky Peppermint Club in West Hollywood in front of an intimate crowd, before launching into a one-hour set filled with beer, tequila, cigarettes and plenty of riffs on the audience. Chappelle made jokes different from the ones in his Netflix specials: about the presidential election, the legacy of Emmett Till and how he’s both nervous and excited about his shows premiering. Nervous about how he'll be received -- something his son isn't sympathetic about -- and excited to get a death threat as a result of the shows airing, like his friend Amy Schumer did with her recent Netflix special.

There were plenty of stars in attendance. Chappelle acknowledged guest Kanye West as he launched into a bit about meeting with President Trump, who the comic said is “the lie that will save America.” Chappelle addressed Kendall Jenner before commenting about the transgender community and warning that he does talk about Caitlyn Jenner in his Netflix special. The jokes are “not malicious,” though, he said. (He later shook hands with Jenner.)

But the highlight of the evening was when Chappelle’s band played him out, and then an anonymous harmonica player joined in from the side of the stage.

The identity of the musician? Stevie Wonder, who finally took center stage to lead a singalong of The Staple Singers' I'll Take You There, then Uptight (Everything’s Alright).

Almost as good as seeing Wonder take the mic was watching Tyler the Creator, seated with Jenner, try to collect his jaw from the floor during Wonder’s impromptu performance.

A V.I.P. after-party followed, with guests including Tobey Maguire, Don Cheadle and Aloe Blacc.

With critiques on Cosby and race, Chappelle's back at the top in new specials

Chappelle continues his comedy tour Tuesday with dates in Texas. His specials, Dave Chappelle: Deep in the Heart of Texas and Dave Chappelle: The Age of Spin, are currently streaming on Netflix.
