Young people lead the Peace March around the Ball Conference Center before heading inside for a Prayer Vigil held for the victims of the Austins Bar shooting Feb. 26, 2017 in Olathe, Kansas.

The former IT worker who shot two Indian men in a Kansas bar last month had earlier confronted his victims on their legal status before being ushered out by bar employees, according to an affidavit released Monday.

Adam Purinton is accused of returning minutes later to Austin's Bar and Grill in Olathe, fatally shooting Srinivas Kuchibhotla and wounding Alok Madasani. A Kansas judge ordered release of the affidavit, although some details were redacted.

Madasani told authorities Purinton asked the men if their "status was legal" and continued to challenge the duo until other bar patrons asked Purinton to leave. About 30 minutes later, Madasani said he heard people yelling "he's back and he has a gun!" seconds before Purinton began shooting.

The affadavit says Ian Grillot, one of the patrons who earlier had asked Purinton to leave, told officers he thought Purinton was out of ammunition and began chasing him. "Purinton then turned and shot Grillot, striking him in the upper chest," the affadavit says.

Purinton fled, but the affadavit states that he was a regular customer at the bar and that employees recognized him.

Hours later, a bartender in Clinton, Mo., called 911 and said a man walked into an Applebee's restaurant and announced he had "killed two Iranians." The barteder warned police not to arrive with sirens blaring for fear Purinton would "freak out." Police arrested Purinton without incident a short time later.

Kuchibhotla was shot at least three times. Madasani was shot in the leg and Grillot suffered wounds to the hand and chest.

Purinton is being held on a $2 million bond, charged with murder and attempted murder. He is next court hearing is Thursday.

Kuchibhotla and Madasani worked locally for tech firm Garmin, which makes GPS devices. A peace march and vigil two days after the shooting drew about 1,000 people.

The FBI's Kansas City has said it is investigating the shooting as a hate crime. President Trump addressed the shooting in a speech to Congress last month.

"Last week's shooting in Kansas City (reminds) us that while we may be a nation divided on policies, we are a country that stands united in condemning hate and evil in all its forms," Trump said.
