Jason Pierre-Paul receives franchise tag from Giants

Less than a year after revamping their defense with a free agency spending spree, the New York Giants moved Monday to keep one of their leading pass rushers in place.

The Giants used the non-exclusive franchise tag on defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul, a person familiar with the move told USA TODAY Sports' Tom Pelissero. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had not yet announced the development.

Pro Football Talk was the first to report the move.

Pierre-Paul, 28, had seven sacks in 12 games last season, his second since a Fourth of July fireworks accident that cost him part of two fingers.

The franchise tender for defensive ends is expected to be around $17 million. The two sides are still working toward a long-term deal, per Stapleton.

Teams have until 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday to use the franchise tag. Three other teams utilized the tag earlier in the day: the Arizona Cardinals (outside linebacker Chandler Jones), the Carolina Panthers (defensive tackle Kawann Short) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (running back Le'Veon Bell).
