Sales of PlayStation VR approaching 1 million

Perhaps there is life in virtual reality after all?

Sony confirmed Monday sales of its PlayStation VR headset reached 915,000 since launching in October, a sign consumers could be warming up to virtual reality.

"Since its October launch, PS VR continues to be well received by people around the world thanks to the high quality, revolutionary VR experience it offers," said Andrew House, president and global CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, in a statement.

According to The New York Times, Sony set an internal goal of selling 1 million headsets by the middle of April. "You literally have people lining up outside stores when they know stock is being replenished," House tells the Times of the response in Japan.

Sony says it will release more than 100 new virtual reality experiences for the platform this year.

The sales milestone marks a bright spot amid concerns consumers weren't interested in VR. One issue is price. PS VR starts at $399.99, the cheapest of the high-end headsets. Facebook-owned Oculus Rift starts at $599.99, while HTC's Vive sells for $799. Neither price factors in the need for a PC capable of running either device. With PS VR, players must own a PlayStation 4 video game console, which starts at $299.99.

However, revenue generated from VR is expected to boom, says SuperData Research. The firm projects global hardware revenue will more than double to $3.6 billion this year, jumping to nearly $18 billion by 2020.
