Re-live the greatest call in American sports history on its 37th anniversary

On this day in 1980, the world watched one of the greatest upsets in sports: The United States claimed victory in a Winter Olympics matchup against the heavily-favored USSR in hockey.

It’s also time to declare it the greatest call in American sports history, if it hasn’t been already.

Al Michaels captures the moment perfectly: He continues calling the 4-3 game as the seconds tick down, and suddenly: “Do you believe in miracles? YES!”

There are calls like the Cal-Stanford “The band is on the field!” and “Down goes Frazier!” or “The Giants win the pennant!”

But Michaels’ call takes us out of the action and instantly puts it into historical context. This isn’t just an upset, or a win on the ice. It’s arguably the all-time greatest David and Goliath moment on the world stage with the Cold War as its backdrop. And on top of that, the “YES” captures what everyone said when the clock hit zero.

Happy Miracle on Ice Day, everyone.
