WhatsApp adds two-step verification

The popular messaging service WhatsApp now includes an extra layer of security.

WhatsApp lets users enable two-step verification, a process requiring an additional code before users can access their accounts. Most services offering the option require users to plug in a code sent via text message or through an authenticator app.

In the case of WhatsApp, when the service needs to verify a user, it asks for a six-digit passcode. To help users remember the code, it will ask for it periodically.

Users can also add their email address to disable the feature through a web link, in case they forget their passcode.

WhatsApp is among several websites offering the extra layer of security to prevent intrusions into their accounts. Services such as Facebook, Google and Twitter are among those offering two-factor verification.
