George H.W. Bush hopes to return home soon
Former President George H.W. Bush remains in stable condition in the intensive care unit at a Houston hospital and hopes to return home soon, a family spokesman said Thursday.
And Barbara Bush, the former first lady, feels "1,000% better" after being admitted to the hospital Wednesday for bronchitis, spokesman Jim McGrath said.
The former president, age 92, went into intensive care at Houston Methodist Hospital with acute respiratory problems stemming from pneumonia.
"His medical team is actively evaluating him for extubation, and we are hopeful he will be discharged from the ICU in a few days." McGrath said.
McGrath said the Bushes also received an "uplifting visit" from old friends, former secretary of State James Baker and wife Susan, McGarth said.

President Obama sent prayers to George and Barbara Bush at a White House news conference on Wednesday.
The Bushes "are deeply appreciative for the wonderful care they are receiving — as well as the prayers and good wishes from far and wide," McGrath said.
Neither of the Bushes will be able to attend Friday's inauguration of Donald Trump; the family will be represented by their son, former President George W. Bush.
In a Facebook posting, George W. Bush thanked supporters for their good thoughts about his parents.
"Your prayers are working," the younger Bush said. "41 and Mom are doing much better today and fighting on."
