John Elway will have some extra salary cap to use in 2017.
The NFL Players Association announced on Wednesday the salary cap totals that each team has elected to carry over into the 2017 season. The Denver Broncos are carrying over more than $7.2 million.
Denver is expected to have around $38,410,833 in 2017 salary cap space, according to Spotrac.com. That estimate will likely go up because Spotrac only calculated $6.8 million to roll over.
The Cleveland Browns carried over the most unused salary cap, more than $50 million. The Los Angeles Chargers carried over the least amount of salary cap, just over $100,000.
The league sets a salary cap each season (expected to be at least $166 million this year) that teams are not allowed to go over. If a team goes under the salary cap, they can carry over the additional money to the next season. As the NFLPA put it, think of it as rollover minutes for a phone plan.
With nearly $40 million to spare, Denver could be a team to watch in free agency. Elway’s previous offseason acquisitions have including Peyton Manning, Wes Welker, T.J. Ward, Aqib Talib and Emmanuel Sanders.
The 2017 free agency signing period will begin on March 9.
