Seth Meyers slams Trump, GOP on healthcare

Kelly Lawler
USA TODAY

Seth Meyers is taking "A Closer Look" at healthcare, and he doesn't like what he sees.

The Late Night host spent his popular segment Tuesday night on a deep dive into President-elect Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans' efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act, without, as Meyers noted, a replacement plan.

“What does ‘we’re going to win on health care’ even mean?” Meyers asked after playing clips of Trump repeating the phrase over the course of the campaign. “The only time I ever consider myself winning on health care is when the nurse calls me in before everyone else in the waiting room.”

Meyers also cited a recent interview with the president-elect in the Washington Post where he said he had a plan formulated to the "final strokes," although wouldn't give details other than saying it would provide “insurance for everybody.”

“Trump talks about policy like he’s trying to get off the phone with someone,” Meyers joked. “‘Yeah, no, health care, it’s going to be great. For who? Um, everybody. Look, I’m going to let you go. Goodbye.'”

The host also called out other Republicans, including House Speaker Paul Ryan, who Meyers showed in a clip at a town hall about healthcare, listening to a cancer survivor explain how Obamacare saved his life.

“Republicans want to forget that the whole reason we have Obamacare in the first place is because health care sucked before,” Meyers said. “Sure, Obamacare isn’t perfect, but it’s better. Obamacare is like a fireman who carried you from a burning building, but on the way out he banged your head into a doorframe. Sure you have a headache now, but at least you’re not on (expletive) fire.”
