Eliot Wolf won’t be the next general manager of the San Francisco 49ers.

Wolf, the Green Bay Packers’ director of football operations and son of hall of fame executive Ron Wolf, removed his name from consideration for the job Thursday, two people with knowledge of the decision told USA TODAY Sports.

Wolf, 34, received a new contract with the Packers, according to one of the people, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the 49ers haven’t been addressing their search publicly.

Minnesota Vikings assistant general manager George Paton has been asked to participate in a second interview and remains in the running, another person with knowledge of the search process said. Brian Gutekunst, the Packers’ director of player personnel, also is believed to be a finalist for the job.

The 49ers plan to have GM candidates meet next week with Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, whom they’ve zeroed in on as their next head coach. They can’t hire Shanahan until the Falcons’ season is over – Atlanta hosts the Packers in Sunday’s NFC championship game.

All other head coaching candidates have dropped out or taken other jobs. Another GM candidate, the Seattle Seahawks’ Trent Kirchner, pulled out of the search Tuesday prior to learning Shanahan had been targeted for the coaching job.
