Fort Lauderdale airport shooting: What we know

A deadly shooting took place at the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Fort Lauderdale, Florida on Friday afternoon. Five people died.

Here's what we know right now:

What happened?

A gunman who a government official identified as Esteban Santiaago opened fire at passengers at a baggage claim, killing five people and injuring eight more.

Witnesses said the man shot several magazines of bullets and then sat on the floor until authorities arrived.

A federal official said the shooter arrived at the airport by way of a flight from Anchorage with a stop over in Minneapolis.

Chip LaMarca, a Broward County commissioner, said via Twitter that the shooter's gun was in his checked bag. After retrieving the bag, he went to the bathroom, loaded the firearm and then started shooting.

Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said a motive hasn't been determined.

How many are dead?

Five people are dead and eight injured injured, law enforcement said. Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said his agency won't release any information on the victims until they identify them.

Israel said SWAT teams are clearing the airport. However, he said the scene is "fluid and active." He added there will be no movement "in or about" the airport until is safe.

When did it happen?

The Broward County Sheriff's Office said it received a phone call about shots fired at the airport at 12:55 p.m.

Is anyone in custody?

U.S. Sen Bill Nelson, a Florida Democrat, told MSNBC that the gunman carried a military ID of a 26-year-old named Esteban Santiago. Israel said the suspect is unharmed and was taken into custody without incident. The subject, he said, is being interviewed by FBI agents and homicide detectives. Law enforcement did not fire shots.

Where did it happen?

It happened in the baggage claim area of the airport's Terminal 2, which serves Delta Airlines.

Was there a second shooter?

No. Reports of a second shooter were deemed unfounded.

Has it affected flights?

The Transportation Security Administration said the airport is closed. The Federal Aviation Administration reported as of 3:10 p.m. that flights are not arriving or departing from the airport. Several flights had been diverted to other South Florida airports. Other flights around the country destined for Fort Lauderdale are being held at the originating airports. Flyers headed to Fort Lauderdale should check with their airline carriers.

Several people tweeted during the shooting, including Ari Fleischer, former White House spokesman for President George W. Bush.
