Seahawks' Pete Carroll: 'I screwed that up' not revealing Richard Sherman injury

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman played injured for much of the season, but few people outside the organization were aware.

Seattle Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll reacts with cornerback Richard Sherman (25) in the third quarter during the game against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field.

That's because Sherman never appeared on the official injury report despite an MCL injury he played through for most of December and the playoffs. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll revealed the injury during a Monday radio appearance.

Sherman usually missed one practice per week in December and January -- though he never missed a game -- but he always carried the NIR ("not injury related") designation. During his postseason news conference Monday, Carroll was asked why.

“I’m feeling like I screwed that up with not telling you that,” Carroll admitted, adding that Sherman's injury won't require surgery. “He was OK, so I don’t know. He never missed anything, I guess, is probably why.

“ ... I didn’t realize that we hadn’t even revealed it. I don’t even remember what game (he suffered the injury in), it was somewhere in the middle, he was fine about it, he didn’t miss anything. Same with Russell (Wilson), he was fine about it. I don’t know how they do that, but they did."

NFL rules mandate players appear on the injury report, even if they aren't forced to miss a practice or game. Clearly the Seahawks realize that since Wilson appeared on the report with a pectoral injury.

The New York Jets were fined $125,000 after failing to report Brett Favre's arm injury suffered during the 2008 season.

Carroll conceded Sherman's injury hindered his effectiveness after the Seahawks allowed 36 points in Saturday's 36-20 NFC divisional playoff defeat to the Atlanta Falcons.
