Carlton Bragg Jr. was benched at least through Saturday’s game against Nebraska after the Kansas forward was charged with misdemeanor battery, Jayhawks coach Bill Self announced on Friday.

“Carlton and I have spoken,” Self said in a news release sent to USA TODAY Sports and other outlets. “He certainly understands the circumstances surrounding this issue. We are taking this charge very seriously. We’re going to hold him out from competition as we continue to gather facts.”

Bragg, a 20-year-old sophomore from Cleveland, was arrested after police in Lawrence, Kan., responded to a 911 call around 1 a.m. Friday. The caller, who described herself as Bragg’s girlfriend, said Bragg “struck her and pushed her down stairs during an argument,” according to the Douglas (Kan.) County District Attorney.

The battery charge Bragg faces carries to six months in jail and a fine.

Bragg was originally arrested on suspicion of domestic battery against a family member and was held without bond, which is typical for those accused of domestic violence in Kansas, Douglas County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Kristen Dymacek told USA TODAY Sports. The district attorney’s office said in a new release that Bragg could not be charged with domestic battery because the relationship between Bragg and the alleged victim “does not meet the statutory requirements.”
