Some Americans have taken the initiative to expand their vocabulary on Election Day.

Merriam-Webster says its top five searches tonight have been fascism, bigot, nerve-racking, socialism and deplorable.

So how does Merriam-Webster define these words?

Fascism: A way of organizing a society in which a government ruled by a dictator controls the lives of the people and in which people are not allowed to disagree with the government

Bigot: A person who strongly and unfairly dislikes other people, ideas, etc.

Prep for the polls: See who is running for president and compare where they stand on key issues in our Voter Guide

Nerve-racking: Causing a person to feel very nervous

Socialism: A way of organizing a society in which major industries are owned and controlled by the government rather than by individual people and companies

Deplorable: Very bad in a way that causes shock, fear, or disgust

Feels like we've heard these words somewhere the past few months...
