The 49ers on Thursday officially concluded their first training camp under new coach Kyle Shanahan with a chippy joint practice against the Denver Broncos ahead of their preseason tilt Saturday night.

San Francisco’s 15 practices were eventful as Shanahan and his staff installed new schemes for the revamped roster. After Thursday, the team no longer has to stay at a nearby hotel. Players can return to their homes and families, but the competitions for spots on the 53-man roster remain ongoing.

“There’s a lot of good competition on our team,” Shanahan said Thursday. “Not just for starter positions, but backup positions. I can tell you, it’s going to be real tough to cut it down to 53. We’re going to need all this game and practices to evaluate that.”
