Seth Meyers chose quite a day to host a gala honoring the environment — the day after Donald Trump was elected president.

But at the Natural Resources Defense Council's annual Night of Comedy, just before his first post-election Late Night episode aired, Meyers paid tribute to New York City's immigrant population, after Trump's win left many of them cold.

Some of Meyers' material fans would hear again several hours later on Late Night, particularly his speech about how, “over these 18 months, I have been wrong about [Trump] at every turn.”

“Based on that pattern, that everything I’ve predicted about him has been wrong, he’s going to turn out to be a great (expletive) president,” he joked.

But later in the evening, Meyers expressed his admiration for immigrants, telling a story about the Uber driver who picked he and his pregnant wife up when she was in labor with their son Ashe Olson.

"I have an eight-month-old son, and I want to talk real quick about the day he was born. I do think today was a bad day for immigrants, I think that’s a safe thing to say,” he said, remembering the chaotic Uber ride to the hospital for Ashe's birth. He thanked his saint of a driver, Tariq, for being so gracious while his wife was “on all fours, in the back of the Uber, with her head out the window, screaming, ‘I don’t like this.’

"This guy Tariq was really lovely, and to this day, my wife and I said if we’d had the baby in the cab, his middle name right now would definitely be Tariq," Meyers continued. "That would be the least we could do for this guy. So I just wanted to say thank you to him, because it just speaks to the wonderful immigrant community, and the wonderful community New York City is, and will continue to be, no matter who our president is."
