The website, frightgeist.withgoogle.com, ranks most popular costumes, nationally and locally. It pulls from the top 500 costume searches in the U.S., according to the site.

A Costume Wizard option allows users to customize what kind of costume they're looking for based on "spookiness level," style (classic or modern), national and local trends and "uniqueness level." Once you've generated a costume idea (this writer got Jedi), you can also share the results on social media with a click of a button.

A third option on Frightgeist shows a map of the U.S. with top costume ideas in local areas. For example, Steampunk costumes show most popular around Glendive, Mont., and old lady costumes are the popular pick around Kirksville, Mo.
