At the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards Monday night, honored actresses used a plethora of adjectives to describe themselves: "powerful," "complex," "funny," "passionate," "focused" and, of course, "nasty."

Or, as Dame Helen Mirren put it when she accepted the Legend Award: "To make you proud that you chose to honor me tonight, I am going to be the nastiest of all nasty women."

Mirren was one of the cover stars being feted at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons in an event sponsored by Hearts on Fire, L'Oreal Paris and Calvin Klein, and hosted by Anthony Anderson. The other honorees, who each gave emotional speeches from the podium after clips of their work was shown, included Kathy Bates, Amy Adams, Lupita Nyong'o, Kristen Stewart, Anna Kendrick, Aja Naomi King and Felicity Jones.

After Mirren invoked the "nasty woman" comment that Donald Trump made towards Hillary Clinton during the last presidential debate, an insult women have been reclaiming in the days since, she made another nod at Trump and offered attendees "tips to get through life."

Dame Mirren's tips:

1. "Never drink alcohol... unless you're celebrating something, upset... or it's a day that ends in the letter 'Y.'"

2. "There are no rules about love... but don't be in a rush to get married."

3. "At the Blackjack table, always split aces, eights and nines."

4. "Connect with friends daily. I don't mean on Facebook. Better to have three great friends than 300 friends on social media."

5. "Ignore anyone who judges the way you look, especially if he or she is some anonymous, miserable creep lurking on the Internet, or is a bloated, small-headed, dinosaur-handed candidate for president."

When Bates was at the podium, she too repeated the phrase that's been emblazoned on T-shirts.

"In the last decade or so... our roles have changed in the world," she said. "We even have a nasty woman about to become leader of the free world."

Bates also shared words of wisdom with her fellow actors and friends: "Looking back at fifty years of some great parts and a lot of pay-the-rent parts, I realize it was being different that maybe actually opened the door for me in my career. And I wouldn't have it any other way."
