49ers comprehensive camp preview: Wide receivers

Editor’s note: In preparation for the start of 49ers training camp in late July, we’ll go through each position and break down our projected depth chart before players compete for roles on the final 53-man roster and handicap each player’s chances at making the team. The first practice is scheduled for July 28.

New 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan was hired after producing top-10 offenses in six of his nine seasons as a coordinator. He’ll have his work cut out for him with San Francisco, inheriting one of the league’s worst offenses, which included the NFL’s last-ranked passing attack in 2016.

Among Shanahan’s top priorities was to rebuild the foundation of offensive personnel with the help of new general manager John Lynch. The 49ers have 12 wideouts on the offseason roster and will have to decide if they want to keep five or six to start the regular season.

Pierre Garçon

Garçon was a premium addition in free agency and 49ers’ biggest upgrade at receiver since trading for Anquan Boldin in 2013. Garçon (6-0, 211) led the NFL with 113 receptions in 2013 when Shannon was his offensive coordinator in Washington, totaling 1,346 yards and five touchdowns. While he’s unlikely to reach those heights with the 49ers, Garçon will be leaned on as the team’s most dependable and experienced receiver.

The 49ers signed Garçon, 30, to a five-year, $42.5 million contract with club options over the final two years. He’s a lock to make the team’s final roster and will likely play a crucial role in the development of the receiving corps over the next few seasons.

Chances Garçon makes 53-man roster: 99 percent
