Auston Matthews

After four goals in NHL debut, what does Auston Matthews do for an encore?

USA Hockey Executive Director Dave Ogrean had visitors in his home Wednesday and wasn’t paying attention to the hockey game on his television screen when a text message from a colleague forced him to take notice.

Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews makes his home debut Saturday at Air Canada Centre against the Boston Bruins.

"The text said: Auston! On track for 240 goals this season,” Ogrean said.

Ogrean quickly did the math and realized Auston Matthews already had scored three goals. He turned up the sound on the game, and started combing websites, in time to see Arizona native Auston Matthews become the first player to score four goals in his first NHL game.

The big question now is what Toronto Maple Leafs sensation Matthews, 19, will do for an encore when he makes his home debut at Air Canada Centre against the Boston Bruins (Saturday, 7 p.m., ET, NBC Sports Network).

"What impresses me is that he always seems to play with an incredible amount of control and poise,” Ogrean told USA TODAY Sports.

No. 1 overall pick Auston Matthews makes history in NHL debut

Bovada released odds Friday for what Matthews might do in his second game and the company’s oddsmakers have him at 7/4 to score at least one goal.

Brian Matthews, Auston’s father, said his son was in a “state of disbelief’ after the four-goal performance.

"He knew what was happening, but I don’t think it had quite sunk in,” Brian Matthews told USA TODAY Sports. “He was still in the moment, trying to figure out what he had learned on his last shift. His brain was just starting to shut down. He was starting to reassess. The look on his face was like, Can you believe that?' ”

Matthews’ dad said his son believes he can play more effectively than he did in his NHL debut.

"There were things that he didn’t like that he did or didn’t do,” the elder Matthews said. “He looks at every game in terms of how do I get better?”

Even before he played his first NHL game, Matthews was USA’s leading point producer (six goals, nine points in 10 games) at last spring’s World Championships, where rosters are made up primarily of NHL talent.

"The fact that he was the youngest guy on the team had nothing to do with anything,” Ogrean said. “He had a very good tournament, and showed very clearly that he could hold his own against National Hockey League players.”

Five months later, the question is whether Matthews deserves to be mentioned in the same category with Edmonton Oilers sensation Connor McDavid.

After one NHL game, is Matthews already among the league’s best American-born players?

"I don’t think it’s too early to say that,” said Jim Johannson who oversees USA’s National Teams. “I think it’s a fair statement when you consider the size and speed of the game today. Now, like every other player he has to show he has the consistency.”

Johannson laughs. “But it’s probably unfair to discuss consistency about a player who just scored four goals in his first NHL game.”

Matthews has been compared to Mike Modano, the all-time American-born NHL scoring leader, because Modano and Matthews are both bigger centers who were drafted No. 1. But they don’t play the same style. Modano’s game was about skating and Matthews has a power element to his game.

Retired American star Bill Guerin said Matthews’ historic night proves how far USA Hockey and the NHL has come in developing talent.

Matthews turned to hockey after his uncle took him to a Phoenix Coyotes game.

"Even 10 years ago, we would not have thought it was possible to have someone from Arizona doing what he has done,” Guerin said. “This is big for hockey in the U.S.”

Added Ogrean: “The fact he’s from Arizona gives athletes who want to take up this game one more reason to believe that anything can happen. A kid from Arizona won’t think I’m really good in my state, but I can’t compete from someone in Massachusetts or Minnesota.”
