Friday's forecast: Stormy in the West

Doyle Rice
USA TODAY

Heavy rain and mountain snow will make for a dreary Friday in much of the West while a warming trend continues in the central U.S.

West: Much of California, the Intermountain West and the central and northern Rockies will see rain and snow on Friday, mostly welcome news for the bone-dry region. The Sierra should see the heaviest precipitation. Though the Pacific Northwest will be mainly dry Friday, more rain is on tap there for the weekend.

Central U.S.: Nearly the entire central U.S. will be clear, dry and warm on Friday, with highs mainly in the toasty 70s and 80s, thanks to a sprawling ridge of high pressure.

East: Other than some rain and snow in New England and Upstate New York, the rest of the East will be dry on Friday. Temperatures will range from the cool 40s and 50s in the Northeast to mild 70s and 80s in the Southeast.
