The sports world mourns the tragic death of pitcher Jose Fernandez

Some utterly heartbreaking news broke on Sunday: That the Miami Marlins’ ace 24 year-old pitcher Jose Fernandez had been killed in a tragic boating accident. The Marlins’ game on Sunday had been cancelled as a result.

USA TODAY sports has the story:

Fernandez, the 24-year-old right-hander whose vibrant personality endeared himself to fans as much as his dominant fastball, was a Cuban-born pitcher who grew up in Miami and was drafted 11th overall by the Marlins in 2011. He overcame Tommy John surgery in 2013 and returned to dominant form this season, winning 16 games, striking out 253 batters and earning an All-Star Game berth.

It’s truly tragic, and after hearing the news, the sports world mourned the loss of a talent taken far too soon.
