5 fall trends to wear (or rent) now

Cara Kelly

It's the first day of fall, and time to pull out those dusty, sweater-packed storage boxes and splurge on an item or two from that fall wish list. Over-the-knee boots, here we come.

So what other trends are on top stylists' lists?

Rent the Runway's Sarah Tam walked us through five straight-from-the-runway and celebrity-endorsed looks to try now that temperatures are finally dropping. Whether you're buying, renting or mining for gems buried in your personal archive, aka the depths of your closet, here are five big trends for the new season.

Radiant reds

We're not fully over the rosé trend that dominated the summer, but are open to the shades of red seen on runways last February. The hues range from bright, fire-engine red to maroon and oxblood, whichcan be worn with black or brown accessories, booties or Mary Janes.

Black magic

Tam and the RTR crew have dubbed this trend Black Magic for its darker, edgier take on the classic little black dress. Lace detailing, cut-outs, sheer paneling, flouncy ruffles and embroidery make these trendy pieces stand out.

They fit with another fun look we saw on the streets at fashion week -- long, sheer gowns over body suits and hot shorts, a sultry but amazing option for a formal event that demands a wow moment.

Precious metals

Black dresses may be perfect canvases for accessories, but if you're not into jewelry, metallic fabrics are a win. Dresses in silver, gunmetal and gold have been all over this year, and they make a statement all by themselves.

Modern menswear

We love a good update to traditional pinstripes and plaids, as does Tam, who says the trend also incorporates a variety of silhouettes like boxy jackets and wide-leg pants. Pair a crisp white blouse with stretch cotton pinstripe pants, or a vertical stripped sack dress, and you're boardroom approved.

Capes

Though some may find them intimidating, Tam says capes are surprisingly easy to wear, and have the benefit of making even simple outfits like jeans and a t-shirt look more sophisticated. Plus, they're not limited to outerwear. Caped gowns are a perfect way to turn heads at formal events.
