Add Google to the list of companies with big fall announcements.

Google's teaser for its October 4 event.

The Android-maker and search engine giant announced late Monday that it will be holding an event on October 4 in San Francisco. In invitations sent out to media, the company was fairly vague as to what it would be showing off, though it was a bit more revealing in teaser on the company's website, madeby.google.com, showcasing a search box that morphs into a rectangle resembling a phone.

Google has long used fall events to showcase its latest versions of Android, often introducing new variants to its Nexus line of phones and tablets. This year, the company is expected to follow a similar path, with new devices built by HTC said to be on the way.

The new HTC phones, which will take on the Pixel branding as opposed to Nexus, are said to come in both 5.5-inch and 5-inch sizes, and will run Android Nougat, the latest version of the company's mobile software. It is also possible that at least one of the phones will take advantage of Google's new Daydream virtual reality platform which the company is also expected to detail.

Beyond new phones and virtual reality, Google is also rumored to provide updates on its new Amazon Echo-like Google Home smart speaker and potentially introduce an updated 4K-capable Chromecast as well, according to a report from Android Police.
