Yankees fans gave David Ortiz a standing ovation in his final game in the Bronx

NEW YORK — The Bronx cheered David Ortiz on Thursday as the outgoing Red Sox slugger and future Hall of Famer played his final game at Yankee Stadium. Before the first pitch, the Yankees honored Ortiz’s career — much of which was spent beating up on the Yankees — with a pregame ceremony that included a visit from old friend Mariano Rivera.

The Yankees gave Ortiz a pair of going-away gifts: A leather-bound book full of memories and signed messages from current and former Yankee players, and a Justyn Farano painting they commissioned showing Ortiz tipping his cap to the Yankee Stadium crowd.

Joined on the field by his son, daughter and wife, Ortiz received a rousing ovation from the Yankee Stadium crowd — many of whom waved Dominican flags — and left the field to the tune of Sweet Caroline, a song more associated with Fenway Park. He also received enthusiastic applause before his first at-bat in the second inning.

With many Red Sox regulars resting after the club clinched the AL East pennant on Wednesday, manager John Farrell said that Ortiz felt “an obligation” to play in the game, given the expected farewell ceremony.

After walking in his second plate appearance of the game, Ortiz exited for pinch-runner Brock Holt. He received another ovation upon leaving the field, tipping his batting helmet to a Bronx crowd chanting, “Papi!”
