5 things you need to know Tuesday
Clinton, Trump shift back to campaigning after debate
Fresh off the first presidential debate, the candidates shift back to the general race Tuesday: Hillary Clinton hits the campaign trail in North Carolina, while Donald Trump heads to Florida for a rally. Both candidates came out swinging in Monday night’s fierce debate. The zingers flew early, from Trump calling Clinton’s email scandal “more than a mistake” to her response to criticism over her preparing for the debate: yes I did. And you know what else I prepared for? I prepared to be president.”
In case you missed it, some other key Debate Night moments:
•The first question was…about the economy, of course.
•Gender, race draw sharp distinctions between the candidates.
•Clinton got interrupted how many times?
•First it was #SickHillary, but last night it was all about #TrumpSniffles.
Iowans prepare for 2nd-worst flooding in history
Iowans in the Cedar Rapids area are bracing for what is expected to be the second-worst round of flooding in its history Tuesday. The National Weather Service predicts the Cedar River to crest at 23 feet at Cedar Rapids on Tuesday afternoon. That's 11 feet above flood stage, but well below the record 31.12 feet set during the devastating flooding in 2008. Authorities asked residents of about 5,000 homes near the river to voluntarily evacuate by Sunday night. Fire officials said they would ask for the names of next of kin from those who said they didn’t want to leave.
Elon Musk to discuss Martian settlement plan
Elon Musk will deliver a long-awaited speech Tuesday, outlining his ideas for how to establish a livable city on Mars within a decade. At the International Astronautical Congress in Guadalajara, Mexico, the SpaceX founder and CEO is expected to offer more details about a system he’s called the “Mars Colonial Transporter,” including a massive new rocket and spaceship that could deliver 100 people to the Red Planet. The speech, titled “Making Humans a Multi-planetary Species,” will be streamed online at 1:30 CT.
Court challenge against Obama’s emission-cutting plan begins
President Obama’s proposed Clean Power Plan, which would trim carbon emissions from coal power plants and other sources, faces a potentially lengthy court challenge from 28 states and scores of companies and industry groups beginning Tuesday. Cutting emissions of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and methane is key to reducing the impact of man-made climate change, and a new study says the U.S. will fall short of emissions goals without additional policies. States and industry opponents argue the federal government doesn’t have the authority to regulate a state’s carbon emissions under the Clean Air Act.
The hottest ticket on Broadway goes national
The smashing blockbuster success Hamilton officially hits the road with a Chicago preview Tuesday, expanding its pop-culture reach to new fans across the U.S. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s hip-infused musical about founding father Alexander Hamilton — which snagged 11 Tony Awards, including best musical, in August — will feature its own cast and tour 12 cities over its two-year national run. Shows are limited, though, so make sure to scoop up your tickets fast and avoid being burned by fakes.
And the essentials:
Weather: While the West stays mostly clear, a cold front will soak much of the Eastern Seaboard.
Stocks: Global stock markets were higher Tuesday as traders followed the U.S. presidential debate.
