5 things to binge-watch this weekend: Halloween horror edition

Are you scared yet?

It’s almost Halloween and as the days get shorter and colder, there’s only one thing we want to be watching: Horror, horror and more horror. If you’re not wowed by the current offering in theaters, let us suggest five TV shows and movies that you can stream from the comfort of your own couch -- that is until you jump off that couch in terror.

If you want your horror weird and campy: American Horror Story

The creator of Glee was never going to do horror in any sort of conventional way. The FX anthology series takes on different tropes from the genre and turns them on their heads while also managing to brutally terrify the audience. The show is not for someone averse to violence (this is not a jump-scare show, this is a graphic-scare show). Some seasons are better than others (let’s just pretend Hotel didn’t happen), but the benefit of the anthology structure is that you can pick and choose which ones to watch.

If you can stand zombie guts and want to understand Twitter on Monday mornings: The Walking Dead

Forget Carl and the detour to the farm in Season 2, and the show’s general tendency to swing back and forth in quality. Remember instead that heart-stopping pilot, the Governor’s assault on the prison and Terminus. Although it mostly relies on creative ways to kill zombies for its horror, Walking Dead has genuinely been able to surprise and scare us. And with Season 7 returning on Sunday (9:00 p.m. ET on AMC), it’s a good time to revisit.

If you wish the X-Files revival had been better: Fringe

Sorry, Scully. If you’re looking for a weekly foray into the supernatural, you should probably check out the J.J. Abrams-produced Fringe instead of the actual new X-Files. Fringe started out as a modern take on the X-Files formula, and quickly evolved into a sci-fi serial with multiple universes, doppelgangers and a lot of Leonard Nimoy. It’s mysterious occurrences tended to be more horrific than weird, equally terrifying and intriguing.

If you’re sick of remakes and sequels: The Blair Witch Project

If the Blair Witch sequel makes you want to watch the original, you’re in luck because it’s currently streaming. You’ve seen it a few times already, sure, but the found-footage flick can still pull off a few scares.

If you’re scared of 2016: The Witch

The horror film, which USA TODAY Film Critic Brian Truitt called the “first great film of 2016,” is a creepy, genuinely shocking slice of horror. Plus, in a year when society's treatment of women is under the microscope, this puritanical movie is surprisingly relevant.
