Philadelphia 76ers rookie guard Ben Simmons sustained a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone of his right foot, the team said in a news release on Friday.

The injury happened during a scrimmage on Friday, and there is no timetable for his return.

An MRI and X-ray helped determine the injury.

In a news release, the team said, "Further medical evaluation and treatment options are being considered at this time and additional updates will be provided when appropriate."

NBA world reacts to the terrible news that Ben Simmons fractured his foot

Simmons, the No. 1 overall pick in the June  draft, was scheduled to start in Philadelphia's first preseason game.

The exact location of the fracture will determine the severity. If it’s a Jones fracture, which is located near the base of the metatarsal, Simmons is looking at a potentially longer absence. Timetables vary from player to player depending on the severity. Pau Gasol once missed 22 games, C.J. McCollum 32 games and Patty Mills 33 games, according to certified athletic trainer Jeff Stotts who tracks NBA injuries. Some players, such as Brook Lopez and Kevin Durant, needed multiple surgeries to fix the fracture.
