Dodgers pay tribute to Vin Scully: Doffing their helmet before every at-bat
LOS ANGELES — It’s hats off to Vin Scully — literally.
As each of the Los Angeles Dodgers batter has walked to the batter's box Sunday, they turned and doffed their batting helmets to Scully, who is calling his last game at Dodger Stadium after 67 seasons as the club's play-by-play announcer.
Well, apparently pitcher Brandon McCarthy didn’t get the memo. After the first eight Dodgers in the lineup doffed their cap during the Dodgers game against the Colorado Rockies, McCarthy entered the batter’s box in the bottom of the second without acknowledging Scully. Perhaps as the starting pitcher, he was too immersed in pregame preparations to learn of the plot.
For his part, Scully, once he caught on, was typically red-faced by the tribute.
“Are they waving up here? Goodness," he said as No. 2 hitter Justin Turner turned to the booth and waved his helmet toward Scully. "I saw Howie Kendrick do the same thing. This is NOT about me. The Dodgers have a chance to clinch the division.”
Scully is scheduled to call his final game Oct. 2 when the Dodgers play the Giants at San Francisco in their regular-season finale.
