Saints wasting Drew Brees' brilliance again

Drew Brees might as well put his house on the market. Because if the Saints' All-Pro quarterback wants to win another Super Bowl, he’s going to have to leave New Orleans.

Drew Brees is in his 11th season with the Saints, but it appears to be another lost one.

Saints, Falcons jointly hold their own unique pre-game demonstration

The Saints' 45-32 loss to the Atlanta Falcons Monday night is the latest evidence that the club is unable to give Brees the roster he deserves. And, more importantly, the roster Brees needs to win a second Super Bowl championship before the window of opportunity closes on the 37-year-old quarterback.

He led the Saints to their first Super Bowl victory in 2010. But that looked like ancient history Monday, when the Saints celebrated the 10th anniversary of their rebirth — the team’s return to the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina. Nostalgia isn't enough to distract from the painful truth.

The Saints dropped to 0-3 and appear doomed for a third consecutive losing season. Brees, though, continues to play at an elite level, passing for 376 yards and three touchdowns on Monday. But even on his best nights, Brees and the high-powered offense can't offset the a ghastly defense.

Entering the Falcons game, the Saints ranked 31st among the league’s 32 teams in total defense — and it’s familiar territory. The Saints are on their third defensive coordinator in five seasons and once again look as if they’ll finish the season ranked 31st or worse in team defense for the fourth time in five years.

The problem is not the coaches. The problem is the personnel. And the problem starts with Mickey Loomis, the team’s general manager.

In 2012, after Saints owner Tom Benson brought the New Orleans Pelicans, Benson named Loomis head of basketball operations for the New Orleans Pelicans, on top of Loomis’ duties with the Saints.

It’s a dysfunctional setup and resembles how the Saints (mal)functioned before Brees and Sean Payton arrived in 2006. Brees’ current contract obligates him to stay with the Saints through the 2017 season, but realistic Saints fans know how they can show their gratitude.

Help Brees pack.
