Seahawks' Jeremy Lane joins Colin Kaepernick's protest, sits during national anthem

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane sits as the national anthem plays before a preseason NFL football game against the Oakland Raiders Thursday, Sept. 1, 2016, in Oakland, Calif.

Colin Kaepernick's protest has spread to a division rival.

Seattle Seahawks cornerback Jeremy Lane sat during the national anthem before Thursday's game against the Oakland Raiders, following the lead of the San Francisco 49ers quarterback’s response to strained race relations in America and, specifically, police brutality against African Americans.

Though the Seahawks and 49ers have been bitter rivals in recent seasons, several Seattle players showed healthy support of Kaepernick when asked about his stance during the week.

Lane said he didn't inform any of his teammates or coaches that he would take the stance.

"It's something I plan to keep on doing until justice is being served," Lane told reporters after the game.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said he supported Lane's decision.

"It's a totally individual decision," Carroll said. "I'm proud of the progress we're making in the conversation."

A fifth-year veteran from Northwestern State, Lane is in line for a starting role opposite Richard Sherman in the Seahawks' secondary. He signed a four-year contract this offseason.

Kaepernick once again did not stand during the national anthem on Thursday, choosing to kneel before the team's game against the San Diego Chargers. He was joined by 49ers safety Eric Reid.
