Watch: New Broncos defensive lineman Henry Melton played running back at Texas

The Broncos have reached a contract agreement with Henry Melton, the 29-year-old defensive lineman posted on Instagram Sunday afternoon.

Denver brought Melton in for a visit Sunday after losing defensive end Vance Walker to a season-ending ACL tear last week. The team has not yet officially announced the move. They’ll have to release a player from the 90-man roster to make room for Melton.

Melton (6-3, 269 pounds) played running back from 2005-2006 at Texas, rushing 132 times for 625 yards and 16 touchdowns as a rotational back. See one of his runs from a blowout win over Rice below:

In 2007, Melton transitioned to defensive tackle, a position he has played since then. The Bears selected him in the fourth round of the 2009 NFL draft and he went on to record 134 tackles and 22.5 sacks in his first six seasons.

Though he has played defensive tackle for the Bears, Cowboys and Buccaneers, he may be a better suited as a defensive end in Denver’s 3-4 defense. As switch should not be a problem as Melton has already proved that he is capable of transitioning positions.

Expect Melton to report to practice with his new teammates Monday.
